Set up in 2001, the .NAME generic domain name extension is the only one planned for personal sites only. These domains can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to secure john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased third-level domains remained working.
